The Do It Yourself Carbon Credit System
None of us are travelling via aircraft very much in these “Covid” days. However, when we did travel, were you one of the 10% of airline passengers, that ticked the carbon offset option when you booked your flight?
In 2016 Australia’s domestic and international aviation industry released around 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
A voluntary carbon offset program was established to counter those emissions in some way, with companies encouraging consumers to tick a box, and pay a little donation to offset the carbon from their flight.
Where do those carbon offsets dollars go?
Currently, they are directed to offering incentives to farmers and developers to not remove trees, and there are incentives offered to replant trees. The other options include investment in renewable or carbon-neutral projects.
In 2021 a new scheme is planned to come into effect, CORSIA - Carbon Offsetting & Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. A very different option to the voluntary consumer offset program, this scheme allows airlines to buy carbon credits for environmental projects, putting the onus and responsibility directly at the wings of the airlines.
Aviation companies are fast-tracking their emission outputs, by building efficiencies into their aircraft and business models. These changes will reduce carbon emissions.
However, at the end of the day, the most simple and effective carbon offset program is a Do It Yourself scheme.
D.I.Y your carbon offsets instead, and allocate your credits with a tree. Instead of, tick a box, plant a tree every time you travel, you’ll be making a beautiful investment in a carbon dioxide munching tree, designed by nature to sequester carbon. Perfect.
